I was ready to be Arsenal's next Ian Wright - now I'm a free agent with no club at 24

A former Arsenal wonderkid likened to Ian Wright is without a club at just 24 - so what happened?

When a young Arsenal striker was first promoted to first-team training in 2019, it seemed as though he had an impressive career ahead of him. Having already made a strong impression with the reserve teams and earned call-ups to the England age-group sides all the way up to Under-19 level, the stage was set for him to live up to comparisons to Ian Wright. Now, at just 24 years of age, he can’t find a club.

Tyreece John-Jules made it all the way to England Under-21 level and impressed on loan in the EFL, but never made his senior debut for Arsenal and was released a year ago. Now, he is clubless and struggling to work out his next move. It wasn’t meant to be this way - so what happened, and where does a talented player go from here?

What happened to former Arsenal forward Tyreece John-Jules?

John-Jules - the nephew of Red Dwarf and Death In Paradise actor Danny, to answer the question inevitably asked whenever his name comes up – was 18 when he signed his first contract with Arsenal. Sadly, he was 19 when he suffered his first significant thigh injury. It wasn’t his last.

A striker who was compared in 2020 to Gunners legend Ian Wright by Arsenal academy football expert John Williamson, John-Jules was a quick and instinctive player with an impressive goalscoring record at youth level, but injuries restricted his chances to maintain momentum as soon as he hit the professional ranks.

John-Jules found himself sent out on a seemingly endless string of loan spells – Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, Blackpool, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Derby County in the space of four years – but every time he started to pick up some steam, there would be another thigh or hamstring injury.

His final loan spell, at Pride Park in the 2023/24 season, saw him miss five months with injuries – and manager Paul Warne spoke movingly about the extent to which the young forward was suffering.

“Because he has come from Arsenal possibly, people think life is perfect for him, but it's not,” Warne told the media. “He has the same demons and problems as everybody else. He's trying to forge a career for himself that his talent deserves.

"He has been training really well, he's been living perfectly, he has done all the work that he needed to do and he was starting to believe in his body. He's been unbelievable in training and is such a popular member of the group. If you speak to him, he is so humble as a kid, he's lovely. For him to go through that is heartbreaking. I am devastated for the kid. It's one of those injuries that will take a bit of time to come back from. When you talk to him, you can see how much it is worrying him.”

All told, John-Jules spent the equivalent of approximately 20 months on the sidelines between the start of the 2020/21 campaign and the end of 2023/24. At a point in his career at which he was meant to be developing quickly and building towards becoming a member of Arsenal’s first team, he was barely able to escape the treatment room. In June 2024, his contract with Arsenal came to an end, and he was released.

What next for John-Jules after endless injuries and Crawley struggles

It took John-Jules several months to find a new club, but he was picked up in October 2024 by League One Crawley Town – but the fresh start turned out to be a false dawn.

Never able to find his form, John-Jules left the club following their relegation to League Two having failed to contribute a goal from his 27 appearances. His performances were, frustratingly, a far cry from those we saw earlier in his career when he impressed on loan at the same level.

Now, the striker is in search of a third permanent club at the age of just 24 and has yet to find a solution. Reports from Croatia suggested that he was on the brink of a surprising move to Hajduk Split, who were said to be “very close” to agreeing a deal on what would have allegedly been a low wage by the standards of the 1.HNL – but for unreported reasons, talks fell through and John-Jules remains clubless.

Throughout his career, John-Jules has been praised by managers for his work ethic and attitude, whether it was Mikel Arteta or the coaches who looked after him during his short stints in the EFL, and that positive approach suggests a striker who will push to find a new team and to rediscover the technique, poise and form which got him to the bench in the 2020 Community Sheild and into the England Under-21 team in 2021.

For now, however, John-Jules remains a free agent at a young age, a harsh reality that few would have believed plausible five years ago when he was first breaking through. Hopefully, this won’t prove to be the end of a once-promising career.
