They are seven point off the Gunners at the summit now, but Unai Emery’s side are back in action on Thursday night with a Europa League away trip to Fenerbahçe. Ahead of kick-off, here is a look at the latest Aston Villa injury news and expected return dates, including news on their latest injury victim John McGinn...

When is Boubakar Kamara back for Aston Villa?

Aston Villa midfielder Boubakar Kamara is currently sidelined with a knee injury. He sustained the setback against Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the FA Cup earlier this month and hasn’t been seen since and until this week it was not known when he would be available again. All that Emery had said to the media was: “I think this week we will know something more.”

Sadly, a report from The Athletic on Tuesday now suggests that the Frenchman will miss the rest of the season due to that injury after further tests revealed that the damage was more severe than first thought. The club have yet to confirm the news, but it appears as though the 26-year-old will be unavailable until the 2026/27 campaign as it stands.

Kamara’s absence could provide youngsters like Lamare Bogarde and George Hemmings with a chance to get some minutes in the middle of the park. The latter came off the bench against Everton and showed glimpses of quality. Emery will want some more experience in that department though as the matches start to come thick and fast and he will be desperate for Kamara to get back fit again as soon as possible.

There may be some positive news on the selection front incoming regarding Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley, though. They have been in the treatment room with thigh and knee issues respectively - however, they aren’t too far away from playing again now which could prove to be a big boost. Emery has said that “Onana and Barkley, they are coming back in one week or two weeks. We have enough players to get the performance we need. Of course, we must replace some players if they are leaving.”

What is the latest update regarding John McGinn’s injury at Aston Villa?

Aston Villa stalwart John McGinn was taken off in the first-half against Everton and is now a big doubt for the Fenerbahçe match. He has sustained a knee injury and will now need to be checked prior to kick-off, and it remains to be seen how long he could potentially be out of action for.

Speaking after the loss against the Toffees, Emery shared this update on McGinn: “Of course when some players are getting injured, it’s not good. But it’s football and we have to accept it and then there are opportunities for other players to play. I don’t know [the details of the injury], it’s his knee.”

McGinn, 31, is a crucial player for Aston Villa and was handed a contract extension late last year. He has been with them since joining back in 2018. The Scotland international, who has 83 caps to his name, has made 314 appearances in all competitions, scoring 35 goals.

Fenerbahçe head into their clash against Emery’s men off the back of their 3-2 win against Alanyaspor. Anderson Talisca scored twice, whilst Anthony Musaba also found the net. They are sat in 2nd in the Turkish Super Lig behind bitter rivals Galatasaray.
