Burnley should swoop for Championship pair in January to save Premier League season

Burnley have struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League and risk slipping back down to the Championship after one year

Burnley have found the step up to the Premier League tough this season and are in the drop zone. They were beaten 3-2 at home by Fulham this weekend. The Clarets are back in action next Saturday with a tricky away trip to Dorset to play AFC Bournemouth as they look to turn their fortunes around.

Scott Parker’s side were promoted from the Championship in the last campaign along with Leeds United and Sunderland. However, they have struggled for form recently and risk slipping back into the second tier if they aren’t careful. They need to add more quality to their squad in the January transfer window.

Burnley should snap up Josh Sargent from Norwich City

Burnley should try and lure Josh Sargent away from Norwich City this winter. The Canaries are in the bottom three and could face a battle to keep hold of the USA international next month, despite the fact he is under contract at Carrow Road until June 2028. He is a proven goal scorer and would be worth a punt by the Clarets.

Sargent, 25, has made 25 caps for his country and will be eyeing a place in their World Cup squad for next summer. Therefore, he could do with playing in the top flight in the meantime to show what he can do. He has been on the books of his current club since joining them back in 2021.

Prior to his switch to England, he played for Werder Bremen and scored 15 goals in 83 games during his time in the Bundesliga. He has since found the net on 54 occasions for Norwich in 149 outings, six of which have come this term. Burnley need to try and tempt him away from East Anglia though to add more competition and depth to their attacking department.

Burnley must also look at Scotland hero Kenny McLean at Norwich City

Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean made headlines last month after scoring from the half-way line for Scotland in their decisive World Cup qualifying match against Denmark at Hampden Park. Burnley should also attempt to snap him up from the Canaries as well as Sargent. He is an experienced operator and would be a useful character to have in and around the dressing room.

McLean has a nice left foot and has played over 600 matches in his career to date. At the age of 33, he has been around the block and would be a sensible short-term option in the middle of the park for the Clarets and could battle with the likes of Josh Cullen, Lesley Ugochukwu and Josh Laurent for a place in Parker’s starting XI.

Burnley have missed Josh Brownhill’s presence since his exit to Saudi Arabia earlier this year. McLean could plug that gap in the heart of the pitch and although he wouldn’t be a long-term option, they just need someone to come in and be able to make an immediate impact. In addition, if they are to go down, they would have a ready-made Football League performer at their disposal.

McLean rose up through the academy at St Mirren and later moved to Aberdeen before Norwich came calling. He has since been a great servant to the Canaries and has featured on just under 300 occasions for them. The Lanarkshire-born man has also made 54 caps for his country.
