Rating Chelsea's top ten most expensive signings ever - including £105m ace and ex-Man Utd flop
Chelsea have been no strangers to splashing the cash in the Premier League over recent years
Chelsea have spent big money on players over the past couple of decades in the Premier League. The London club have won the top flight title on six occasions so far in their history with the most recent coming in 2018. They have also got their hands on the Champions League. FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and Europa Conference League.
Enzo Maresca was picked as their head coach last year. Prior to his move to Stamford Bridge, he caught the eye at Leicester City. He has also worked at Manchester City in the past under Pep Guardiola.
Ex-Real Madrid ace included in Chelsea’s most expensive buys
10) Christian Pulisic: Chelsea forked out £55 million to land the USA international from Borrusia Dortmund. However, he failed to live up to that price tag overall in the end. He scored only one goal in 30 games in all competitions in his final season before he was sold to AC Milan. Rating: 5/10
9) Marc Cucurella: The Blues paid Brighton and Hove Albion £56.5m to sign the left-back in 2022. He remains with them today and is a regular at the back under Maresca. The Spaniard has made 116 appearances altogether to date and has turned out to be a solid option. Rating: 7/10
8) Alvaro Morata: A lot was expected from the striker when he arrived for £57m back in 2017 from Real Madrid. However, he struggled to settle in England and was loaned out twice to Atletico Madrid. He now plays in Italy for Como. Rating: 5/10
7) Mykhailo Mudryk: His move to Chelsea has turned into a nightmare after his £60.5m switch from Shakhtar Donetsk. He didn’t score in his first 17 outings and despite improving ever so slightly, he was then struck with a suspension for alleged doping. Arsenal wanted him back in 2023 as well but dodged a bullet. Rating: 2/10
6) Kepa Arrizabalaga: The Blues handed Athletic Bilbao a hefty £69m to secure the goalkeeper’s services. He went on to play 163 matches but wasn’t the most reliable of options between the sticks. The stopper was loaned out to Real Madrid and AFC Bournemouth before he was sold to Arsenal. Rating: 4/10
Chelsea’s most expensive buys including varying success
5) Wesley Fofana: Chelsea parted ways with £69.5m to sign the centre-back from Leicester. The 24-year-old has since had a torrid time on the injury front since his move away from the King Power Stadium. He didn’t play at all during the 2023/24 season. Rating: 3/10
4) Kai Havertz: The Arsenal attacker cost the Blues £86.5m when he arrived from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2020. He spent three years with them and fired 32 goals in 139 matches. Although largely remembered as a flop, the German scored the winner in the Champions League final against Manchester City which bumps up his rating slightly. Rating: 6/10
3) Romelu Lukaka: He is someone who has split opinion among football fans over recent times. On his day, he can be unstoppable, but he isn’t consistent enough. Chelsea paid a whopping £97.5m for the forward in 2021 from Inter Milan but he couldn’t find his shooting boots and was loaned back out to Inter and then Roma before he was sold to Napoli. Rating: 4/10
2) Moises Caicedo: The midfielder was snapped up for a mega £100m after he impressed at Brighton. He has since turned out to be a useful addition and injects quality into Maresca’s ranks. In addition, he is still only 23 so has potential to get better. Rating: 8/10
1) Enzo Fernandez: Chelsea’s record signing cost them £105mi from Benfica. He joined in 2023 and has since enjoyed plenty of game time in the middle of the park. The 24-year-old is a key player and like Caicedo, has room to develop further still, which was the whole point behind him signing. Rating: 7/10
