The genius £18m bargain striker signing Chelsea could seal in January transfer window to supercharge title bid
Enzo Maresca needs striker help in January after Liam Delap and Joao Pedro have failed to settle at Stamford Bridge
The 2026 January transfer window will be a fascinating one for Chelsea as it will provide an insight into whether they’re a competitive football club first, or a player trading platform that just happens to be one of the biggest teams in England.

Chelsea have the youngest squad in the Premier League by over a year at 23 years and four months, while none of the other title contenders are below 25. Their collapse after drawing to Arsenal showed they could use some experience particularly at the back as they have no players in their 30s excluding the exiled Raheem Sterling.
Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo are simply not a collection of centre-backs that can be the foundation for a title-winning team and given Liam Delap’s persistent injury issues since moving from Ipswich Town paired with Joao Pedro’s discomfort leading the line, more depth at striker would be useful.
Signing a couple of veteran champions (e.g. Robert Lewandowski), plus a world-class centre-back like Marc Guehi, Nico Schlotterbeck or Edmond Tapsoba would all be moves that could turn The Blues into genuine contenders for the Premier League title but would go against Chelsea’s philosophy of looking to make a profit on as many players as possible in the transfer market.
However, one player that could fulfil both needs is Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Garcia, reportedly valued at €20 million (£17.6m).
Garcia the perfect investment for Chelsea
He’s not the finished article yet, but Garcia has the potential to be an all-action striker in one of Europe’s big five leagues. Though given Los Blancos’ terrible record of turning academy prospects into first-team stars, that may not be at the Bernabeu. Garcia can operate both on the shoulder of the last defender, or find space in a crowded penalty area while he’s shown he’s a capable aerial threat despite not looking too physically imposing.
He possesses that unteachable knack of being in the right place at the right time in the penalty area but is also capable of playing the target man and bringing the other attackers into the game around him, he’d certainly dovetail well with Cole Palmer. Aged 21, he could either be rotated into Chelsea’s first-team immediately or farmed out on loan to either Strasbourg or elsewhere to further develop.
Garcia struck for Los Blancos in the Club World Cup but most of his experience has come for Real Madrid Castilla in the Spanish lower leagues, for whom he hit 26 goals last season, so he could certainly use more time to develop as a first-teamer but both his floor and ceiling are high.
Considering Chelsea managed to raise £20 million for Armando Broja, who aged 24 still has less career goals than Garcia, the worst outcome for Chelsea with Garcia barring injury (and he’s yet to miss a game in his career through injury) is that they sell him for a small profit. The market for talented strikers is lucrative and only inflating.
However, he also has the ability to become a prolific Premier League striker and could suit Enzo Maresca’s project at Stamford Bridge making Garcia the perfect low-risk, high-reward investment for Chelsea.
