The bargain midfield signing who could save Everton millions and hand David Moyes a new weapon

Everton are likely to be active on the transfer front this summer

Everton boss David Moyes will be eager to put more of his own stamp on his squad this summer. The transfer window will give him the chance to add more quality to his ranks when it opens for business later this year. There are plenty of players who are out of contract at the end of the season and are due to become free agents in late June.

Moyes has managed to keep the Toffees up with relative ease since his emotional return. He was brought in after their decision to sack Sean Dyche and has done an impressive job to date. His team are positioned in 13th place in the table with five fixtures left to play, 17 points above the drop zone.

Everton should target Angel Gomes swoop

Everton should look at snapping up Angel Gomes from Lille when his deal in France expires. The attacking midfielder, 24, is facing an uncertain future in Ligue 1. He has been a key player for his current club since joining them back in 2020 and they will face a real battle to keep hold of him.

The London-born man has made four caps for the England national team so far. He could do with returning to his home country this year to boost his chances of getting into Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the future. A team like the Toffees would be able to offer him regular minutes to show what he can do, as opposed to going to someone in the top four or top six.

Gomes rose up through the academy ranks at Manchester United, so he comes from a background of pedigree. He was a regular for the Red Devils at various different youth levels before going on to play ten games for their first-team as a youngster. The North West outfit loaned him out to Boavista to get some experience under his belt, before he was given the green light to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis.

His switch abroad has worked out well for him. He is one of Lille’s most prized assets and won the Trophée des Champions with them back in 2021. Gomes has made 134 appearances for them to date and has chipped in with ten goals and 19 assists.

Where would Angel Gomes fit in at Everton?

Everton need to be shrewd with their recruitment from now on. They could do with not spending big money on players and should try and be smart. Landing a player such as Gomes, who is available for nothing, would save them a lot of cash.

If they brought him in, he would add more competition and depth to their attacking department. He would give them something different to pick from and could inject some more creativity into their starting XI. In addition, he is still relatively young and has potential to grow and develop down the line.

The Toffees are gearing up for an exciting new chapter in their new stadium and will be wary that they need individuals to get fans off their seats. Gomes is a bright spark who is tricky and likes to create opportunities for his teammates. His statistics at Lille are also impressive which shows he is capable of getting goals for himself if needed.

Moyes knows him already and the pair actually crossed paths at Manchester United. Gomes was in the youth set-up whilst the now Everton head coach was in charge of the Red Devils. That could give the Merseyside club an advantage ahead of other teams in this particular pursuit.
