The golden Leeds United and Celtic transfer swap deal that could supercharge survival and title bids
Daniel Farke has £150 million to turn Leeds United into Premier League survivors
As Leeds United fans come to terms with the announcement that Junior Firpo’s transfer saga has finally ended with the Dominican returning to Real Betis, attention swiftly turns to how Daniel Farke can replace his attacking output in the 2025/26 Premier League, and a £21 million Celtic winger may be the answer.
Firpo notched 14 goal contributions in the Championship last season despite making all 32 appearances at left-back, while Manor Solomon returns to Tottenham after a barnstorming loan spell where the Israeli scored 10 and assisted 12 of Leeds’ 95 league goals.
Replacing that output will be a tough task for Farke who is hoping to make Leeds the first promoted side in two years to avoid an immediate return to the Championship and he’s been given a £150m budget this summer transfer window to upgrade the squad.
And Daizen Maeda could be the perfect player to resupply the left flank, after he outproduced Solomon and Firpo’s combined goals and assists total last season for Celtic. Meanwhile to preserve as much as of that nine-figure war chest as possible, Leeds could secure a discount by sending Patrick Bamford to Glasgow where a change of scene could work wonders for the former England star.
Daizen Maeda has the tools to become a Premier League superstar
Celtic have a mixed history of selling to the Premier League especially the three biggest transfers - Kieran Tierney hasn’t lived up to the hype at Arsenal while Crystal Palace loaned Odsonne Edouard to Premier League rivals Leicester last season and the book is yet to be written on Matt O’Riley’s Brighton career.
However Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama and Fraser Forster were all successes on the south coast and beyond (maybe Southampton should sign Maeda instead) alongside Brentford’s Kristoffer Ajer, while looking back a bit further into the past Stiliyan Petrov became a fan favourite at Villa Park before his career was cut short, and Mark Viduka scored 72 goals for Leeds.
And 25 years on from the Australian arriving at Elland Road Maeda could be the next in that pipeline, as Brendan Rodgers may look to cash in on the reigning Celtic Player of the Season who has two years remaining on his contract.
And crucially for a side expected to be fighting relegation next season, Maeda is a clinical finisher. He boasted a strike rate of better than a goal every four shots in the 2024/25 Champions League per FBref.com - significantly more prolific than Harry Kane, Erling Haaland or Ousmane Dembele who were all around one in 6-7 - as Celtic enjoyed a fairytale run in Europe outperforming a host of better-funded clubs to reach the knockout phase play-offs.
Maeda even netted against Bayern Munich as the Bhoys were unlucky to get knocked out by the German champions, and while the 2024/25 campaign was his best in hoops, the 28-year-old is far from a one-season wonder having hit double-figure goal tallies in his last three seasons. So he’d be just the player Leeds need to kick-start their survival bid, while one of their previous top scorers in the Premier League could benefit from a move north of the border to reset his career.
Low risk, high reward Patrick Bamford gamble worth it for Brendan Rodgers
It’s easy to forget now, but Bamford finished as the joint-fourth highest scorer in the Premier League in his first proper crack at top-flight football less than five years ago, level with Son Heung-min the season before the South Korean was the co-recipient of the golden boot. Now aged 32 and with a year left on his contract, Leeds were reportedly shopping Bamford for £7m in January but that’s dropped to around £2-3m this summer with a host of Championship clubs interested.
However, Celtic could benefit from more depth at striker and a chance machine at his best, Bamford’s earnest style could prove to be a hit in the Scottish Premiership. He retains the ability to bring others into play and destabilise the opposition defence, while he was one of the pressing leaders for Marcelo Bielsa’s all-conquering side.
Bamford never relied on searing pace but cerebral movement and plenty of other strikers have thrived north of the border in their 30s from Kenny Miller to Kris Boyd to Brian Graham. Meanwhile Bamford, who many thought was unlucky to miss out on Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad, will have seen how fellow ex-Three Lions Jack Butland and Joe Hart have created silverware swansongs in Glasgow.
For Rodgers it would be a low-risk punt while Leeds would get some return for a player who has served them well across seven seasons, and sign a forward who could ignite their attack and play a major part in saving the Whites from relegation if Maeda can replicate his Celtic output for Farke.
