Leeds United should target 'very dangerous' Championship striker in January - Opinion
Leeds United will get the chance to sign some more players in the January transfer window
Leeds United were promoted from the Championship last season along with Burnley and Sunderland. The Whites stormed to the second tier title under the guidance of Daniel Farke. They have since adapted well to life back in the top flight and are above the drop zone after their first seven fixtures.
The Yorkshire outfit were busy on the recruitment front over the summer after going up from the second tier. They have the opportunity to bring in some more new faces when the January transfer window opens up for business. Farke will already be plotting potential winter targets.
Leeds United should consider Haji Wright at Coventry City
Leeds should look to bolster their attacking department. Haji Wright has been on fire for Coventry City so far in this campaign and would be worth a gamble by the Whites. He is the top scorer in the Championship above the likes of Oli McBurnie, Brandon Thomas-Asante, Victor Torp and Josh Sargent and has eight goals in nine games to his name already.
Wright, 27, has proved he knows where the back of the net is in the league before and should now test himself in the division above. He rocked up at the CBS Arena back in 2023 and has since fired 40 goals in 92 outings for the Sky Blues, 12 of which came last term. His contract expires in June 2027 so his current club are under no pressure to sell him just yet and can wait for the right offer to come in for his services.
The USA international, who has 17 caps to his name, will be eager to make their World Cup squad for next year so a big move in the meantime can’t be ruled out. Prior to his transfer to England, he played all over Europe for the likes of Schalke 04, SV Sandhausen, VVV-Venlo, Sønderjyske and Antalaspor to he has experienced plenty of different countries and cultures. He started out as a youngster at LA Galaxy before leaving his native country.
Why Haji Wright would suit Leeds United
Wright is full of confidence at the moment and would give Leeds another option to pick from at the top end of the pitch. He would give the Whites more competition and depth up top for the second half of the season. In addition, he can also play off the left which is useful.
Coventry won’t want to sell him though, especially as they look to claw themselves to the Premier League under Frank Lampard. They have been in fine form recently and are yet to lose in the league. They have fired 27 goals already and are on a roll.
Lampard has been full of praise recently for Wright and has said: “There’s a really good energy about Haji at the moment and he’s a very, very good player. So we’re happy to have him and I hope we’ll push that and that he remains as consistent in how he started the season because he’s shown already what I believed in him anyway. But in the role he’s been playing, which has been more central now, he’s a very dangerous player, so I’m very happy with him.”
If Leeds aren’t able to lure Wright away from the Sky Blues, there are other forward options they could pursue instead. It is a surprise to see Sargent still on the books at Norwich City and he would be worth a call. The American, like Wright, has been scoring goals on a regular basis of late.
The Whites were beaten 2-1 at home by Tottenham Hotspur this weekend and weren’t able to get anything from the game. They are back in action after the international break as they look to bounce back and return to winning ways. Next up is an away trip to Turf Moor to play Burnley.
