Forget Marc Guehi: Liverpool could be thanking Agent Luis Suarez for dream new Liverpool defender signing

Liverpool could be in the market for a defender after failing to sign Marc Guehi

Premier League leaders Liverpool have begun the new season with a perfect record, to follow on from a near-perfect summer transfer window where they smashed the British transfer record twice.

The only blot on the Reds’ summer business proved to be their failure to land Marc Guehi, as the England man stayed with Crystal Palace after the Eagles blocked an exit for their club captain.

Centre-back remains the only area of the field of concern for Liverpool. With only three senior centre-backs at the club alongside teenager Giovanni Leoni, the Reds are an injury to Virgil van Dijk away from a crisis. With Joe Gomez injury-prone and Ibrahima Konate courted by Real Madrid amidst an impasse over a new deal, Arne Slot’s side will surely enter the market for a new defender soon.

A return for Guehi in January has reportedly taken a blow as the 25-year-old is said to also have his heart set on a move to Real Madrid. Another option has emerged, though - and the Reds may have former hero Luis Suarez to thank.

Agent Suarez could seal Liverpool deal for Ronald Araujo

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has emerged as an alternative option for Liverpool in recent days, amidst reports that the Reds may be willing to spend €50 million (£43m) on the 26-year-old. Fresh reports have suggested that Liverpool may have a secret agent who could help them seal a monumental deal.

According to reports by E-Noticies, Luis Suarez has personally left Araujo a ‘call’ and ‘told’ his former Uruguay international team-mate to sign for Liverpool. Suarez is a legend for both clubs involved, having departed Anfield to sign for La Blaugrana for £65m in 2014 in one chapter of his storied career.

Araujo has been in and out of the team in La Liga after returning from a significant hamstring injury mid-way through last season, and may be open to a fresh start as a result. He shone for Barca in the Champions League as they were victorious in their opening fixture away at Newcastle United, proving his credentials to dominate against some of the best the Premier League has to offer.

Liverpool January move for Araujo could make major difference

Injuries and fatigue can begin to kick in around the mid-way point of the season amidst challenges across domestic and European competitions, meaning a January acquisition of Araujo could prove to be a game-changer for Liverpool.

If Suarez can help to persuade his fellow countryman that Anfield is the right destination for him should he decide to depart Barcelona, it could help push a move across the line as Liverpool look to cause a major stir in the transfer market once again.

Barcelona’s financial difficulties are well known and if they can recoup a £43m fee for a player they spent just around €5m on as a 19-year-old, it may be viewed as a deal which is too good to turn down for the Catalan giants.

Araujo is an accomplished defender, physically dominant and capable of covering at right-back in addition to his regular role in the centre of defence. The 24-cap Uruguay international has been targeted by Premier League clubs on multiple occasions in the past and if Liverpool legend Suarez has his way, his next destination could be to help with a title challenge on the Red side of Merseyside.
