The best cheap defenders to sign in Football Manager 2026 – including Manchester United star

10 of the best budget-friendly defenders to sign in Football Manager 2026 - including a Manchester United wing-back.

There are just a few more days before Football Manager 2026 hits the digital shelves after a tortuous development process – but plenty of players, ourselves included, have already been sinking our teeth into the early access beta, and that means we’re getting a picture of some of the best moves players can make when they dive into their brand new saves.

We’ve already taken a look at some of the best wonderkids, best free agents and best budget goalkeepers you can buy at the start of a new game, so now it’s time to take a look at some of the spiciest cheap defenders you can snap up if you’re operating on a tight budget - and now you can check out the best cheap midfielders, too.

We’ve split these into two sections – five players whose maximum transfer value comes in under £1m, and five who won’t cost you more than £5m. All could cost a fair bit less, but you shouldn’t be forking out any more, so hopefully this list suits a range of budgets. Let’s dive in…

Former Atlético Madrid star among best budget defenders in Football Manager 2026

Renan Lodi – D/WB/M L (free agent): A confession – we completely missed the fact that former Atlético Madrid (and Nottingham Forest) man Renan Lodi was available on a free when we listed the best free agents in the game, and he’d definitely have qualified if we’d spotted him. He’s still only 27 and he’s got solid-to-good stats in every place you want them for an overlapping wing-back with no meaningful weaknesses. A great grab for a Premier League side in need of some cheap reinforcements.

Jeisson Quinones – D C (Yokohama FM - £1m maximum transfer value): Decent ball-playing centre-halves are hard to find on a budget in this game, but this 27-year-old Colombian can do a job. He could stand to be a little quicker but he’s got some good mental attributes and he’s got 13 or 14 in all the technical and defensive stats that count.

Danijel Lonćar – D C (Pogoń - £80k): A very cheap option indeed, Lonćar probably doesn’t cut it at top-flight level but a lower league team that wants a decent no-nonsense option should check this guy out – he’s got 16 tackling and determination, acceptable physical and mental stats, and really won’t break the bank. Sadly, he may not get a work permit if you’re playing in the UK.

William Kokolo – D/WB L (Hannover 96 - £450k): When we looked at free agent signing, we noted that Ryan Fredericks would be a great wing-back to buy if you need raw pace down the flanks. Should you fail to get him, however, than Kokolo is an affordable Plan B. He’s very quick and has decent enough technical qualities that he should but all that pace to good use.

Cesar Blackman – D/WB/AM R (Slovan Bratislava - £500k): If you’re going super-aggressive, Blackman is your man for the right wing-back role. He’s got excellent physicals, solid technical qualities and a decent head on his shoulders, with the drawback being that he isn’t very good at actual defending. If you’re going for a back three and want wing-backs bombing forward, however, the Panamanian is worth a scouting trip.

Manchester United man among cheap defenders worth signing in FM26

Tyrell Malacia – D/WB L (Manchester United - £1.2m): Look, you know the risk here. Malacia starts the game transfer listed at just £1.2m and that’s incredible value for those stats, but will he stay fit? No doubt there are some hidden numbers which make him injury prone (we don’t have access to the editor yet to check) but if he does stay healthy there aren’t many better bargains in the game.

Oleksandr Tymchyk – D/WB R (Dynamo Kyiv - £4.7m): A less risky option on the other side of the pitch, the Ukraine international has 16 acceleration and pace, can tackle and has good mental attributes. Not a brilliant technician, so he’s a defender and not someone you want hitting the final third on the overlap, but he’ll deal with pacy wingers all day long.

Merih Demiral – D C (Al-Ahli - £4.2m): Not so long ago, the 27-year-old was at Juventus, but now his Saudi side want him gone and he’s transfer listed at a competitive price. He has absolutely superb stats for a no-nonsense centre-back including 16 marking and 17 for tackling and heading, and while he isn’t fast he’s a great buy for a top-flight team playing a low block. A slightly cheaper option along the same lines would be SV Darmstadt’s Aleksandr Vukotić, who tops out at £3.1m.

Kevin Akpoguma – D RC/WB R (Hoffenheim - £1.9m): Quite why this guy is transfer listed, we don’t know, but perhaps it reflects something happening in real life and he was a regular starter in the Bundesliga last season. He’s got good physicals, great mental stats and can land a tackle to go with his versatility. Birmingham City are trying to buy him in our save.

Strahinja Eraković – D RC (Zenit St. Petersburg - £3.6m): If you have no compunctions about dealing with Russian teams in the game, then 24-year-old Serbian defender Eraković is a good target for a team that needs a ball-playing defender, with solid passing and technique to go alongside good core defensive attributes and decent mental and physical stats. Unfortunately not an international for work permit purposes. An alternative option is Talleres’ Matías Catalán, who tops out at £1.8m, but he’s 32 and a short-term fix at best.
