The £52m Man United winger signing who could solve major January problem for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United could solve a key issue with this new signing in January

Manchester United could look to the January transfer window to improve Ruben Amorim’s squad as the Red Devils look to compete for a return to the top six come the end of the Premier League season.

Following last term’s 15th-place finish, there has been clear improvement this time around – not that it could have got any worse – but there is still a long way to go in the season and Red Devils fans will be wary of getting too carried away at this early stage in the campaign.

United’s summer business has largely proven to be a masterstroke, as Senne Lammens has shone in goal while Bryan Mbeumo went one further and won Premier League Player of the Month for October.

Amorim could still look to add further reinforcements in the winter, though, particularly with one major problem approaching and little existing solution for the Portuguese head coach at present.

Man United ‘opportunity’ to sign AC Milan star Christian Pulisic

Man United have been given the ‘opportunity’ to seal a mid-season move for AC Milan and USA international winger Christian Pulisic, who could exit the Italian giants after a ‘shock twist’ in which the 27-year-old has stalled on signing a new contract, as per Football Transfers.

Sports Illustrated add that the former Chelsea winger is ‘agitating’ for a move away from Milan after the Serie A outfit failed to qualify for European football last season. He is thought to be aware that as he is in his prime years, he may be approaching his final stretch competing at the top level and wants to play regular Champions League football.

It is, therefore, somewhat surprising that United have been suggested as a possible destination - but if the Amorim project continues on its current trajectory, Pulisic could have the opportunity to contribute to a top-five finish and Champions League football for the Red Devils if he decides to take the plunge and move to Manchester in January, where he was previously linked last year.

The 1998-born star’s current contract runs until 2027 and Milan are keen to secure an extension for their top scorer from last season, who bagged 17 goals and 12 assists last term and 15 goals and 11 assists the season before that.

He signed from Chelsea for a reported £20m in 2023, and the improvement in his numbers from his time at Stamford Bridge has been stark. Reports in late 2024 indicated that Milan had slapped a €60m (£52m) asking price on Pulisic.

Pulisic could be solution to major Man United problem

If Pulisic were to arrive in Manchester on January 1st, he could solve a major issue for the Red Devils and Amorim.

The issue surrounds the Africa Cup of Nations, in which wingers Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo will both be competing in the winter. The tournament will run between 21 December and 18 January 2026, meaning that both of United’s first-choice options from the right will be unavailable for the majority of January, possibly longer considering any knocks picked up during the tournament.

Pulisic’s role at the club would extend far beyond that single month, but there is no doubt that the right winger could prove a difference-maker in one of the most intense months of the season, with six matches taking place whilst both Mbeumo and Diallo could be away on international duty with Cameroon and Ivory Coast respectively.

Pulisic could even make a case to start as part of a revamped front three alongside Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha when the former returns to action, if Amorim decides that Benjamin Sesko’s adaptation is still not quite going to plan.

The signing of another player with experience winning major honours – such as the Champions League with Chelsea – could make a huge impact on Amorim’s squad as they seek to reach the next level. It will be intriguing to see if this potential move gains further traction as we near the winter window.
