The £35m dream Man Utd midfield signing who could galvanise surge towards Champions League - opinion
Manchester United have an important few weeks ahead of them ahead of the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season
Manchester United need to add some more quality to their ranks this summer. They have the chance to bring in some new faces over the next couple of months. The Red Devils also have the opportunity to let some players head out the exit door as well if needed.
Ruben Amorim’s side finished down in 15th place in the Premier League table last season. A club of their size simply must compete higher up the league next time around. In the meantime, they will be able to make some changes to their squad in this window.
Manchester United should target Douglas Luiz
Douglas Luiz’ move to Juventus around 12 months ago hasn’t worked out. The Serie A giants lured the midfielder away from Aston Villa. However, he has struggled to make the impact he would have wanted to.
His future in Turin is now in the air and he is said to be valued at £35million. He would be ideal for United if they tried to bring him back to England from Serie A. However, they are likely to have to see off competition from elsewhere for his services.
Luiz, 27, was a hit during his time at Villa Park and proved himself in the top flight. He joined the Midlands outfit back in 2019 and went on to make 204 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 22 goals, 10 of which came in his last year. He has since featured on 27 outings for Juventus but hasn’t managed to score.
The Brazil international, who has made 18 caps for his country to date, started his career at Vasco de Gama. He rose up through their academy and was a regular at various youth levels. The Rio-born man broke into their first-team as a teenager before leaving South America for Europe.
Manchester City snapped him up in 2017 but he didn’t play for their first-team during his days at the Etihad Stadium. Instead, he was loaned out twice to Girona. He got plenty of experience under his belt during his days in La Liga and boosted his development before Aston Villa came calling.
Why Douglas Luiz would suit Manchester United
Luiz was a key player for Aston Villa and it was a massive blow to lose him. His switch to Juventus hasn’t paid off for either party though and an exit would do him good. He could benefit from a change of scene and needs to go somewhere he is guaranteed regular football.
He would be perfect for United and would give them more competition and depth in the middle of the park. If he joined, he could inject some more experiece into their ranks. In addition, he can provide Amorim with something different to call upon.
The Red Devils have wasted a lot of money over recent years and their recruitment model hasn’t been sustainable. Therefore, they must ensure that they are shrewd with their dealings and bring in the right type of characters. Luiz fits the bill for the Old Trafford outfit as he knows the league, has already shown his quality previously at their level and could be available for a relatively cheap price in today’s market.
