The clever free transfer that would elevate Newcastle this summer transfer window

Newcastle should look to secure this free agent signing this summer

Newcastle United are having a challenging domestic season and their Champions League chances were dealt a blow on Tuesday as Barcelona equalised with a stoppage-time penalty to earn a 1-1 draw in their last 16 first leg at St James’ Park.

The Toon had led through Harvey Barnes but Lamine Yamal kept his cool from the spot late on to ensure the Catalan giants went back to Spain with the scores still level and everything still to play for.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe said at full-time: "I thought we were outstanding, a really, really good performance. We kept the intensity up. The moment at the end takes that in a negative light but one of our best performances. It is my job to try and pick them up. We have unfortunately had to do that a few times this season, but our strength of character should never be in doubt. We will be ready by the time the next game comes round. We believe in ourselves and our capability and we have shown that today."

Newcastle could look to secure free agent striker

Newcastle could have an important summer transfer window ahead as key players such as Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento are linked with big-money moves away to Premier League rival sides. The Toon may need to be smart in the transfer market and could look to a free agent signing to solve a notable issue they have at striker at present.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic is set to see his contract expire on June 30 and the Serbian will become a free agent this summer unless new terms are agreed. The 26-year-old has spent time out injured this season and has scored six goals in just 17 matches this term, though he is expected to return to action imminently ahead of the run-in.

Vlahovic was signed from Fiorentina in 2022 for a fee of up to £70million including add-ons, though Juve were reportedly ready to part with him for just £26m last summer. That did not materialise, and the player is still at the club – but that could soon change.

Vlahovic could be game-changing signing - if wage issue can be resolved

Newcastle were reportedly offered Vlahovic last summer but opted against signing the Serbian, as Howe opted to sign striker duo Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa instead. It is fair to say that neither striker have consistently shown why they were signed for £124m between them, with Woltemade already linked with an exit and another striking option targeted for the summer.

A key sticking point for both Newcastle last year and for Juventus in negotiations at present is Vlahovic’s wage demands. The 26-year-old earns a reported €12m (£10.4m) per year and would need to drop those demands significantly to earn a new deal in Turin, amidst the club’s financial problems.

Newcastle have similar financial restrictions to adhere to and would need to agree a lower wage which could see the forward align with their existing wage structure. If this can be agreed, though, the North East side would be signing a striker who has 90 goals in 215 Serie A matches and can decide games at the highest level. Plus, he knows what it’s like to shine in black and white, too.
