We’ll stick with players who are likely to be widely selected in the game and we won’t be providing regular updates on players who are injured for the long run (which currently includes James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Levi Colwill, Gabriel Jesus and Lisandro Martínez) but we will make sure you have the best information possible to help you select your team each week.

MORE ESSENTIAL FPL INSIGHT

Before the start of the 2025/26 season, there are a host of players with worrying yellow and orange triangles next to their names, ranging from Anthony Gordon and Phil Foden to Morgan Rogers and Caoimhín Kelleher – and we’ve got updates on all of them and more below for you. Let’s dive in…

Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Morgan Rogers among big-name doubts

Anthony Gordon: The Newcastle winger twisted his ankle in a warm-up game against Atlético Madrid last Saturday and manager Eddie Howe told the media that “the initial feeling is he should be OK” ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off against Aston Villa. Gordon – who could operate as a centre-forward this weekend the Magpies’ only recognised striker refusing to play – also took to social media to say that there were “no problems”, hinting that he should be ready to play a full role this weekend.

Alexander Isak & Yoane Wissa: It’s worth circling back to that comment about the Newcastle striker who’s on… well, strike… because while Alexander Isak was the top-scoring forward in the FPL last season, he’s definitely a dodgy choice for Gameweek 1 this time around. He’s refusing to train or play as he attempts to force a transfer to Liverpool through, and can’t be expected to be involved on Saturday. Similarly, Brentford forward Yoane Wissa will not feature against Nottingham Forest on Sunday as he tries to ensure his own move to Newcastle. No doubt both will be high-scoring assets somewhere down the line, but perhaps not right away.

Morgan Rogers: Rogers was forced off during the second half of Villa’s pre-season game against AS Roma last week with what appeared to be an ankle problem, but looks likely to be ready to go for the season opener in Newcastle after being pictured training at Bodymoor Heath. Unai Emery has since confirmed his availability, although there’s always a chance that he doesn’t get the full 90.

Phil Foden: Foden didn’t have a great season last year but should remain in many FPL managers’ thoughts given his ceiling – but he was a minor doubt for the weekend’s trip to Wolves thanks to a knock to his ankle which kept him out of a recent pre-season friendly against Palermo. The England international returned to training on Thursday and Pep Guardiola told the media that Foden could “hopefully” play a full 90 minutes this weekend, later confirming his availability during his Friday press conference.

Joško Gvardiol: The Croatian left-back is among the most expensive defenders in the game, but he won’t be paying his £6.0m transfer fee back immediately - Gvardiol is “not ready” for the match against Wolves after sustaining a knock which, like Foden, left him unable to play against Palermo. It doesn’t sound like a long-term issue.

Rodri: Perhaps more of a surprise is that Rodri, who was expected to be out for several more weeks, could play against Wolves, according to Guardiola. The Spaniard has returned to training following a groin injury weeks ahead of the date suggested by most media reports and will travel with the squad. Guardiola made it sounds as though he may see the pitch but is highly unlikely to start.

Antonee Robinson: The Fulham wing-back racked up 10 assists last season and should be one of the few full-backs who benefits from the new defensive contributions rules, but won’t be ready to play against Brighton & Hove Albion after undergoing surgery on a knee injury. A return date has not yet been set and the American isn’t in training, but he isn’t expected to be out for the long term.

Caoimhín Kelleher & Martin Dúbravka among goalkeeping who could miss out

Caoimhín Kelleher: The Brentford goalkeeper is among the most popular picks between the sticks thanks to his budget-friendly £4.5m price tag, but Keith Andrews is expected to make a late decision on his first-choice stopper’s involvement this weekend after Kelleher sat out the final warm-up match with a knock. Andrews told reporters on Thursday that he would “see over the next day and a half” before making a call. The implications seem to be that the Irishman will play, and he is in training.

Martin Dúbravka: Even more players have got Dúbravka in their squad now that the Slovakia international could be a starting £4.0m goalkeeper after moving to Burnley – but he’s been yellow-flagged after missing the Clarets’ final warm-up match. Apparently Dúbravka has been doing individual training, and there’s no suggestion of a serious injury, but may be lacking match sharpness. Scott Parker unhelpfully refused to be drawn during his pre-match press conference on Thursday, so it’s unclear whether he will start the season as Burnley’s number one or not.

Jarrad Branthwaite: The Everton centre-back could be set for some big scores this season under the new defensive contribution rules, but won’t be available for a little while – a hamstring injury means that he could be sidelined for up to six weeks, according to The Daily Mail. Vitalii Mykolenko is a major doubt due to a pre-season injury, the extent of which remains unknown at the time of writing.

Justin Kluivert: The Dutchman was a handy budget signing last season, but may be off to a slow start this time around – a calf injury has kept him out of training all week and it has been confirmed that he won’t be involved against Liverpool. He isn’t expected to miss that much time, fortunately for Andoni Iraola. Dango Ouattara won’t feature pending his club record transfer to Brentford, either, so Bournemouth’s attack will be rather depleted this time around.
