Isak, Wilson & Trippier: Newcastle United injury news and return dates ahead of Brighton showdown

The latest injury updates as Newcastle United prepare to return to Premier League action against Brighton this weekend.

Newcastle United will hope to end a run of three Premier League games without a win on Saturday when they face Brighton and Hove Albion at St James Park.

After making a largely positive start to the new season, Eddie Howe’s side suffered their first defeat of the campaign when they fell to a 3-1 loss at Fulham last month. Since then, the Magpies battled to a home draw with reigning champions Manchester City before earning a point with a goalless draw at Everton prior to the international break.

The latter of those games saw Howe go into battle without the services of several key players as the Magpies boss continues to suffer a number of injury issues. However, there is expected to be some good news on the horizon for Howe and his coaching staff ahead of Saturday’s home clash with the Seagulls. 3 Added Minutes looks at the latest injury updates and possible return dates for a number of Newcastle players.

Alexander Isak

The striker has missed the Magpies last two Premier League games and the Carabao Cup tie with AFC Wimbledon after suffering a foot injury in the 2-1 win against Wolvehampton Wanderers. The former Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad star was not named in the Sweden squad for their Nations League double header with Azerbaijan and Estonia. However, Isak is expected to return to contention for the Magpies home game with Brighton Expected return date: Saturday 19th October

Sven Botman

The Dutch defender quickly established himself as a key member of Howe’s squad after joining the Magpies during the summer of 2022. However, his second full season at St James Park was brought to a premature end by a serious knee injury. Despite making some positive noises about closing in on a return, Newcastle are likely to take a patient approach with Botman and it seems he is unlikely to return to contention until December Expected return date: December 2024

Jamaal Lascelles

The Magpies club captain was starting to earn some regular game-time during the second half of last season when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury that ended his campaign. Lascelles is not expected to return until the new year, by which time his current contract with Newcastle will have entered its final six months Expected return date: January 2025

Callum Wilson

After missing the majority of the second half of last season with a chest injury and an illness, Wilson was hoping to hit the ground running during the current campaign. However, a back injury has meant the England striker is yet to feature during the season - although a return to contention is believed to be imminent Expected return date: Saturday 19th October

Martin Dubravka

The long-serving goalkeeper is still viewed as main backup to number one stopper Nick Pope despite being linked with a move away from St James Park during the summer. However, Dubravka has not been involved in the goalless draw against Everton prior to the international break after suffering a knee injury. The Slovakia international did not feature for his country against Sweden and Azerbaijan over the last week - but is expected to be in the Magpies squad for Saturday’s home game with Brighton Expected return date: Saturday 19th October

Lewis Miley

The Magpies academy product enjoyed a breakthrough season last time out with impressive performances against the likes of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Fulham. However, a back injury brought a premature end to his campaign and Miley is yet to feature this season after suffering a broken metatarsal during the summer. The youngster is closing on a return and could feature towards the end of the month. Expected return date: Late-October

Kieran Trippier

The former England international is expected to miss Saturday’s home game with Brighton and suffering a hamstring injury against Everton. A return date is as yet unknown as the Magpies continue to assess the injury Expected return date: Unknown
