Newcastle’s next January signing could be an all-or-nothing gamble on exciting £7m full-back

Eddie Howe needs to improve Newcastle's defence to boost their Premier League hopes

Despite a tumultuous start to the season for Newcastle United, it could still prove to be a memorable one at home and in Europe, and making the right deals while avoiding the wrong ones in the January transfer window can play a huge part in furthering those prospects.

It’s somewhat remarkable that in a season that began with The Magpies losing their best player from 2024/25, and only rushing a signing over the line at the death after a gut-wrenching amount of rejections at striker and elsewhere, Eddie Howe’s side remain in contention for a top-four finish and are headed into the Knockout Phase of the Champions League. They could even go straight into the last 16, and remain alive in the FA Cup and (just about) in the and League Cup.

They’ve been partially aided by the Premier League’s general weakness in 2025/26 - 12 months ago 32 points would’ve only been good enough for ninth and Newcastle’s goal difference at that point of the campaign was triple what it is today. Yet Howe must also receive some credit for knitting together a side that is capable of remaining broadly on track after the August chaos.

However, Newcastle can’t rely on those factors forever and they must strengthen, or at least improve their depth, this winter. Top of the priority list is full-back, as it’s not long since Howe was put in the unholy position of starting Dan Burn on the left side of defence. And one left-back who would improve The Magpies’ squad immediately with the potential to become a long-term starter is Toulouse’s 19-year-old star Dayann Methalie.

What could Newcastle expect from Methalie?

The youngster only made his senior debut this season but has immediately become one of the most exciting full-backs in Ligue 1. Electric with the ball at his feet, Methalie is in the top 6% of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for successful take-ons per game according to Opta via FBref, around the same as Antoine Semenyo, Eberechi Eze and Michael Kayode. He ranks even higher for carries into the penalty and is adept at drawing fouls too.

And critically, he’s also one of the more defensively savvy left-backs around with a tackle success rate of 83.3% that would put him in the Premier League’s top three players, out of 197. The sample size obviously isn’t massive, but Methalie has still played over a thousand minutes in the last year with only one injury issue.

Methalie could turn out to be a bargain for Newcastle if he can successfully replicate his form on this side of the English channel, and Lewis Hall’s presence means Newcastle should be able to ease the teenager into their plans rather than throwing him in at the deep end. The Magpies are now a squad who need multiple first-team quality players at every position and they’re lacking that right now at left-back.

But this deal isn’t a slam-dunk success otherwise they’ve have signed Methalie on New Year’s Day - instead it carries significant risk for Howe’s side.

The Magpies’ great gamble

The twist is that Methalie is yet to kick a football in 2026. He picked up a knee injury and went under the knife for ‘minor surgery’, so it’s not clear if he’ll be fit to play before the end of the transfer window. There’s no rule against clubs signing an injured player but obviously it’s a rarer phenomenon.

It’s unclear what Methalie’s price tag is - he’s highly touted and Newcastle are far from the only club interested, but his injury will surely compress that value. Transfermarkt lists his value at €8 million (£7m) - that figure is usually lower than a player’s eventual transfer fee but given Methalie’s situation it could be more accurate.

Newcastle’s interest hasn’t vanished despite the setback, and he could certainly prove to be a revelation for a club who had a fantastic hit rate in the transfer market before this summer. However, he could prove to be a dud for a club who don’t have too much financial wiggle room and not just because of a dodgy knee; 19-year-olds jumping from Ligue 1 to English football have a patchy success rate.

The ultimate question is whether The Magpies are willing to take that high-risk, high-reward punt.
