Liverpool eye £51m bid for latest big-money summer signing as Newcastle chase Marc Guehi alternative wonderkid
Rounding up the latest Premier League transfer rumours - with news from Newcastle, Liverpool, Sunderland and more.
The transfer window is back open for business, and teams seem keen to get deals sorted quickly this summer – so to help you stay up-to-date with all the latest news, we’re back with our daily digest of the latest Premier League transfer rumours, starting with a story for Newcastle United fans.
Most of The Daily Telegraph’s story from Monday concerns the club’s negotiations for Brighton £60m-rated forward João Pedro (ongoing) and Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga (no bid made) but that was all information we already knew, more or less – the claim that they’re set to bid for Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande, however, is more interesting.
The Magpies had already been linked with the 21-year-old Ivorian defender, but Chelsea and Crystal Palace were believed to be at the front of the queue. This report claims that Newcastle are now “likely to be at the table” when negotiations start and that they have “regularly scouted” him, a fact that the Telegraph believe they were trying to keep secret.
They still hold an interest in Marc Guéhi, so a bid isn’t guaranteed, but the defender – whose technical skills have made him among the most sought-after centre-backs in Europe – also seems to be a very real option.
The 3AM Verdict: Diomande fits Howe’s playing style nicely on paper, so it’s no shock to see them getting ready to make a move, but it may be that he’s a back-up plan should they fail to land Guéhi. The same seems to be the case for Elanga, and they may only bid for the Swedish winger if they can’t get hold of João Pedro. It’s suggested that they’ve given up on getting Bryan Mbeumo.
Liverpool enter race for Southampton starlet
Diomande isn’t the only youngster set for a big move this summer – Southampton’s Tyler Dibling made a strong impression in his breakthrough season, and now Caught Offside claim that Liverpool have joined the list of teams plotting a move for the 19-year-old.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle are all mentioned as already being interested parties alongside a host of European clubs such as RB Leipzig. Other reports also claim that Porto are making a move, too, and there is clearly no shortage of suitors for the attacking midfielder.
Liverpool, who hadn’t previously been seen as serious contenders for Dibling’s signature, now show “a concrete interest” with the youngster “set to leave” the Saints following their relegation. He’s expected to cost around €60m (£51m).
The 3AM Verdict: Maybe, but Liverpool are already engaging in some massive spending and probably don’t need to drop £50m on a player who would, at best, be backing up Florian Wirtz to start with. There’s not enough detail in this article to make us believe that Liverpool are keen to make a bid in the immediate future.
Sunderland set to bring English wonderkid home

Let’s stick with the wonderkid theme for our final story, which concerns Premier League newcomers Sunderland – according to Sport Witness, the Black Cats are interested in Toulouse’s England Under-21 international defender Charlie Creswell, whose performances in France have “seen him end up on Sunderland’s agenda”.
Apparently, manager Régis Le Bris sees Creswell as “an ideal target”, while the prospect of a swift return to England following his departure from Leeds may appeal to the defender.
There’s no word on a transfer fee beyond the fact that it would be more than Transfermark’s suggested price tag of €10m, which seems obvious given his success in Ligue 1 and the three years he has left on his contract. In any case, any negotiations will have to wait until he’s finished his work with the Young Lions in the European Under-21 Championship.
The 3AM Verdict: The original source for the story is a French website we aren’t too familiar with, so we aren’t sure how reliable that might be, but Creswell has had a very impressive start to life abroad and has plenty of room to develop further, so we can see the appeal. One we’ll need more sources on before we really believe it.
