The best cheap midfielders to sign in Football Manager 2026 – including Rangers youngster and ex-Spurs flop

10 of the best cheap midfielders to sign in your first Football Manager 2026 save.

With Football Manager 2026’s official release just around the corner on 4 November, we’ve been going through the database ahead of launch to pick out some of the best players you can sign in the game when you start up your first save.

We’ve already looked over some of the best wonderkids in the game and the best budget-friendly goalkeepers and defenders, but now we’re taking a peek at some of the finest affordable midfielders you can sign to bolster your team from the start of the game.

Once again, we’ve split this list in two to cover different budgetary restraints, so we’ve got five players with a maximum transfer value of £1m and five more who go up to £5m – but remember that all of these players could well be available for less. Well, except the free agent. He isn’t going to pay you to sign him.

Former Southampton star among best sub-£1m midfielders in Football Manager 2026

Oriel Romeu – DM/M C (free agent): Romeu may be 33 and pretty slow these days, but the former Southampton, Chelsea and Barcelona midfielder has plenty of stamina, great metal attributes and rock-solid mental stats, and you won’t do any better for free. Christian Rivera is a younger free transfer worth taking a peek at, too, if you want a cheaper option.

Takahiro Ohgihara – DM/M C (Vissel Kobe - £475k maximum transfer value): Frankly, it’s really hard to find cheap midfielders with top-of-the-range physical stats – but if you don’t mind signing an older player, Japanese midfielder Ohgihara is a paragon of fitness at 33 with great pace and stamina and high determination and work rate alongside technical qualities that would be acceptable for most lower-end top league teams. He won’t get a work permit, sadly, so look elsewhere if you’re in the UK.

Marko Tolić – M/AM C (Slovan Bratislava - £950k): Slovan have a few bargain buys in this edition, and 29-year-old Croatian midfielder Tolić could be among them. He’s not fast but he’s got 16 for passing alongside 15 in technique and vision and he can dribble, too. A fine playmaker at Championship level or thereabouts.

Metincan Cici – AM LC (24 Erzincanspor - £130k): The second tier of Turkish football isn’t usually a fertile scouting ground, but Cici has upside for teams on a really tight budget. He’s 30 and already way too slow for the top levels of the game, but he’s got incredible technical stats for the cost, a bucket-load of flair, 17 for long shots and is a genuine set piece expert. A really interesting number 10 for a lower-league save.

Tom Moustier - DC/DM/M C (Rot-Weiß Essen - £190k): Moustier is a really solid all-rounder, as befits his positional versatility – he doesn’t have any amazing strengths save for stamina and long throws, but he also has very few weaknesses indeed and has 12s and 13s pretty much everywhere you’d want them. He wouldn’t cut it in the Premier League, but he’s a really great squad-level player in most other divisions.

Rangers and former Spurs midfielders among best FM26 buys below £5m

Connor Barron – DM/M C (Rangers - £4.7m): You’re paying in part for Barron’s potential, here, and the 22-year-old will need some coaching on one or two of his technical stats, but he’s decently quick and has a fantastic work rate and mental stats more generally. In other words, he’s already got the stuff you can’t teach, he’s a solid set piece taker, and he has the potential to be a Premier League-tier box-to-box midfielder.

Salih Özcan – DM/M C (Borussia Dortmund - £1.8m): The 27-year-old starts the game transfer listed for a very low fee in our saves and is an incredible bargain at the price. The Turk has fantastic mental attributes and technical skills that pass muster at top-flight level and several Premier League teams wanted him in our game.

Tanguy Ndombele – DM/MC (OGC Nice - £4.7m): Ndombele may have flopped at Spurs a few years back but he’s still got some big numbers to his name in Football Manager, with great passing, technique and dribbling making him a useful addition to a midfield there or a double pivot. A lack of pace restricts the number of roles he could play at Premier League level, but the stats are there to make Ndombele a fine investment for the right system.

Julian Justvan – AM RC (1.FC Nürnberg - £3.8m): When you start looking for attacking midfielders, it’s hard to find genuine bargains. Players with really good stats here simply cost more. Justvan, at least, is a good all-rounder who has decent technique and can happily play as a winger or as a 10. A jack of all trades, master of none type of player who was shortlisted by Celta Vigo in our save, to give you an idea of his level.

Toni Fruk – MC/AM/ST (Rijeka - £4.1m): Fruk is only 24, versatile, has good technique and ball control and the stats to operate effective as a 10, a deep-lying forward or as a straight-up striker. A bit more speed wouldn’t go amiss, but that’s the only real weakness here, and Fruk would be a fine addition for a lot of teams.
