Solanke, Werner and Gray: Three 5s & one 4/10 - rating every Tottenham summer signing so far this season
Tottenham have had a mixed start to the season but have they got the value for money from their summer arrivals?
Tottenham ended their last stretch of games with a very disappointing defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion. They took a 2-0 lead on the south coast but ended up losing 3-2 after conceding three goals in the second half. This was their first defeat since the North London derby, and they had seemed to be heading in the right direction until then.
That loss has put pressure back on manager Ange Postecoglou, who has insisted he wins trophies wherever he goes. Now, he must get things right and ensure he is getting the best out of the group of players brought in over the summer, some of whom were interesting signings.
Sitting 10th on the league table with 10 points after seven games will have been disappointing for the Lilywhites. As we enter the second international break of the season, here’s a look at how the new players have performed so far:
Dominic Solanke - 6
He didn’t score on his debut and then picked up an injury that forced him to miss a couple of games. However, he’s played five games, scoring two goals and one more in Europe, which is quite decent for someone adjusting to a new team. It’s still early, but there have been signs he can bring his Bournemouth form to Tottenham.
Wilson Odobert - 5
The 19-year-old is currently injured, but he was clearly signed with the future in mind. One thing that’s very clear is how rapid a player he is. He already managed three league games before injury struck.
Archie Gray - 5
Spurs paid £40 million for Gray, who is young and gifted and can play both in midfield and defence. However, he hasn’t had a big breakthrough yet. He’s featured in six games in total: twice in the Europa League, once in the League Cup, and three times in the Premier League. While there are glimpses of promise, it’s fair to say he still needs time.
Lucas Bergvall - 5
The Swedish midfielder was signed in January but only joined this summer and is still finding his feet. He’s played five times in the league, totaling just 46 minutes, along with two appearances in the Europa League and one in the League Cup. Back in Sweden, he’s touted as the next big thing, but Spurs are still waiting for him to make his mark.
Timo Werner - 4
Werner is back on another loan deal, but this has been one of his poorest starts to a season. He is yet to score, though he has gotten more game time due to club captain Son Heung-min’s injury and Richarlison’s struggles. Manager Ange Postecoglou will need to find a way to rebuild his confidence and get him back to the level he was at last season.
