Sunderland sign £30m midfielder and La Liga winger in surprising January transfer window prediction
Sunderland still have a shot at qualifying for the Europa League or Conference League - but what will they do in the transfer market?
It’s unsurprisingly been a quiet January transfer window for Sunderland after their mammoth summer spend, and with The Black Cats’ African Cup of Nations contingent now all back at the Stadium of Light, it would be a shock if that changed significantly in the next week.

The only clubs with a higher net spend than Sunderland in the summer were Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur - a lot of good it’s done them both - Liverpool and Arsenal, and it’s been mission accomplished for Regis Le Bris’ side as they sat level on points with Newcastle in eighth before the weekend, and are on the verge of a safe points total already.
On the pitch, Sunderland just need to keep doing what’s been working so well and try and maximise their league position (and therefore prize money) with European qualification still not totally off the table, but off it the picture has shifted.
In the next two transfer windows, Sunderland need to optimise the squad to remain a mid-table Premier League team in 2026/27, and making big splashes this January is not conducive to that goal. With that in mind, we asked Grok to predict how the rest of this window will go for The Black Cats.
Sunderland prioritise quality, not quantity, in predicted transfer window
James McAtee - loan from Nottingham Forest: James McAtee could be a good addition for Sunderland, but context would be key. Sunderland don’t need a loan for McAtee or a player like him in the second half of the season, so this would really come down to Forest’s motivation to let him go.
He’s really struggled at the City Ground since his £30 million move from Manchester City so if Forest just want him to have a shot at better game time this could work - though there are better destinations for that than the Stadium of Light. However, if Forest want his loan club to take on a significant portion of his wages then Sunderland should walk away.
Ruben Vargas - £17m from Sevilla: Once again, we do not think Sunderland will pay any eight-figure transfer fees in the remainder of this window. But Grok is allowed to have its say, and it backed Sunderland to bring the Leeds United and Tottenham target to the Stadium of Light.
Vargas is certainly an exciting player, and aged 27 this would be a pretty good price for a player with 58 international caps for a team as good as Switzerland, who has played almost 200 games across Europe’s top five leagues and can be deployed anywhere in the front four.
Neil leaves for Germany
Dan Neil - £18m to FC Koln: It would be a miracle if Sunderland got this fee for Neil given that the 24-year-old’s contract expires this summer, but he does appear likely to leave the North East in the not-so-distant future.
After all the summer signings in midfield, the local favourite has been a bit-part player in Sunderland’s incredible return to the Premier League, and reportedly has suitors in the Premier League, north of the border in Scotland, and on the continent. We have our suspicions that Grok is getting a little fanciful with the specifics of this prediction, however.
There is still more than a week to go before the end of the January transfer window and there’s every chance that the Black Cats could spring another surprise or two, but getting this much money for a player expected to leave on a free transfer would be an impressive and improbable trick.
