West Ham have dream second chance to snap up a £22m wonderkid – and should jump at the chance
A rumoured transfer target for West Ham could be on the move this summer - but just how good is Lecce’s Tiago Gabriel?
If there’s one thing that West Ham have gotten badly wrong over the past few seasons, it’s the way they’ve build their defence. Many expensive disappointments have been signed over the course of the last few transfer windows, and the result is a back line that has conceded more goals than any other team except for Wolves and Burnley.

Should they survive the relegation battle they’re currently embroiled in, then it would be unsurprising for them to try and rebuild their defence in the summer, and reports from Italy suggest that they could well get a second chance at a talented 21-year-old they reportedly came close to signing in January – Lecce rising star Tiago Gabriel.
Who is Tiago Gabriel – and why might West Ham be keen to sign him?
When Tiago Gabriel transferred from Portuguese outfit Estrela da Amadora to Lecce in January 2025 for around €1m (£870,000) there was precious little fanfare. Now, less than 18 months on, teams from the upper echelons of both English and Italian football are showing considerable interest in a player who has established himself as among the brightest prospects in Serie A.
Over the winter, both West Ham and Brentford were strongly linked with a bid, likely to be worth around £20m, as were Juventus. Lecce opted to hold on at that time, but may not be able to resist bids in the summer. Now, according to Corriere dello Sport, AC Milan are keen – but they also suggest that interest from the Premier League remains.
Tall and powerful at 6’4”, Gabriel cuts an imposing figure at centre-back and has been hugely impressive in one-on-one situations, both in the ground an on the air, all season. Lecce have struggled as a whole, but the youngster has consistently stood out, and not just because he tends to tower over the players around him.
Not only does he have the physical traits required of a centre-back, but he also has the instinctive positional sense to make sure he’s in the right place at the right time, a fact demonstrated by a hugely impressive tally of 6.7 clearances per match. Very little gets past him, and he rarely puts himself in a position in which he is forced to lunge in to a tackle or engage in any desperate defending.
There have been occasional lapses in concentration, expected for a 21-year-old playing in a defence which has spent most of the season under pressure, but he has cut a remarkably composed figure even under persistently difficult circumstances. In terms of the way he uses both his physique and his ability to read the game to deal with balls into the box, his playing style is reminiscent of Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite – minus the injury issues.
Like Branthwaite, he’s also developing nicely as a passer and is rapidly improving his distribution and use of the ball. He is unlikely to end up as a true ball-playing defender, and the fact that he has only attempted a single dribble in Serie A this season hints at his technical limitations and awareness of them, but he has the tools to be dominant in the air, efficient on the ground and to use possession sensibly when required.
In short, he has all the physical and mental tools to become a first-rate defender – indeed, based on his work at Lecce over the last year or so, he already is. So will West Ham be able to sign him this summer, and could they really beat a team like AC Milan to the punch?
Will West Ham sign Lecce’s Tiago Gabriel this summer?
Corriere dello Sport report that AC Milan are looking at Gabriel as a potential summer target, but also notes that Lecce’s asking price – reportedly in the €20-25m range (up to nearly £22m and in line with reports in January) – may be too rich for the Rossoneri’s blood.
The gap between Premier League and Serie A spending power could give West Ham the leverage required to beat a more gilded side like Milan to an ascending player like Gabriel. Milan may have a reputational advantage and are on course to be able to offer players Champions League football, but West Ham can outbid them regardless. Milan are allegedly hesitating at a price which the Hammers could meet with ease.
Gabriel only has one more year left on his contract with Lecce officially, but the club hold the option to extend it by another two years. Even if they get relegated – they are currently in the bottom three by goal difference behind Cremonese – they are in a relatively solid bargaining position. That could play into West Ham’s hands.
It’s worth noting that while West Ham have been specifically named as an interested party in the past, Corriere dello Sport’s latest story does not specify which Premier League teams might be interested. It’s possible that the Hammers have turned their attentions elsewhere, although it’s difficult to see what might have caused them to lose interest over the past few months.
If Milan do decide to enter the bidding alongside West Ham, they will clearly have the advantage when it comes to contract negotiations, but there is every chance that the Hammers would be able to prevent it from getting that far by outbidding their potential rivals. If an English side like Brentford, also said to have been keen in January, then things could be different, but even with interest from elite sides there is no reason to believe that this would be an unrealistic bidding war for West Ham to get themselves involved in.
Of course, all of this presupposes that West Ham survive, and they can consider themselves out of luck in more than one regard if they go down. Stay up, however, and a move for Gabriel could easily happen unless those January reports were surprisingly far wide of the mark – and compared to the likes of Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo, Gabriel could end up offering remarkably good value.
