The risks and rewards as Chelsea 'eye' 21-year-old Real Madrid target tipped to be the next Varane

Chelsea continues to be linked to one of the fastest-rising stars of French football, but do they really need him at this point?

The Chelsea owners have listened to the criticism since they took over the club two seasons ago. There have been times when people questioned the direction of the club, and results have shown that improvements are necessary for Chelsea to return to their former glory. Despite this, the owners have emphasised that they are aware of the feedback but will continue with their plan, which is to ensure that the club becomes a hub for the best talents from around the globe.

This week, they have been linked to one of the best-performing defenders in the Bundesliga, Castello Lukeba. Blessed with incredible technique and the versatility to play across the backline, the 21-year-old has attracted interest from scouts at both Real Madrid and Chelsea. Aston Villa are another club eyeing the player, according to Caught Offside.

L'Équipe has reported that he reminds them of a young Raphael Varane, and it is no surprise that his strong form has positioned Leipzig as a potential Bundesliga challenger this season. He is a leader and has the potential to become one of the top defenders of his generation if he continues to improve, looking very composed on the field.

He has already represented the French national team, and during his time coming through the ranks at Lyon, there were talks that he could become a club legend before they were forced to sell him to Leipzig. Yet, even a change of country and league has not slowed him down.

Do Chelsea Need Another Youngster?

Chelsea already have Axel Disasi, who has a similar profile, as well as Benoît Badiashile, who also arrived with a comparable skill set. However, both players are currently dealing with injuries and are not part of the first-team setup. They have had to watch as Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana take up starting roles in the league. Given that Colwill and Fofana are both very young and need consistent game time to develop, it is highly unlikely that another young defender would come in and immediately secure the minutes needed for growth.

Sources in France have suggested that Chelsea's plan would be to sign Lukeba and then leave him at Leipzig, allowing him to continue his development before bringing him to the Premier League when he is ready. Arsenal have had similar success with William Saliba, who spent time on loan at Nice and Marseille before returning to become a key player in North London. This strategy could be effective, although there is a concern that Chelsea might end up stockpiling talent.

The Risks and Benefits

The risk is that Lukeba, like other young defenders at the club, is not yet proven at the highest level. However, the reward is that, for a relatively modest fee of around £35 million, Chelsea could secure a future star. The recent success of players like Noni Madueke and Cole Palmer suggests that this approach could help Chelsea remain competitive while also being visionary in their recruitment strategy for the future.
