Liverpool’s hand could be forced into January loan deal as Tottenham eye 27-goal lethal Harry Kane alternative
The latest Premier League transfer rumour involving Liverpool, Tottenham and more
The Premier League continues to take its twists and turns as the gap at the top is now starting to close.
Liverpool were dealt their first defeat of the season when high-flying Crystal Palace denied them the chance of extending their perfect run. The points margin between the Reds and Arsenal is now at just two.
Despite spending a significant amount of cash over the summer, Liverpool are still seeing issues with their squad. Florian Wirtz continues to come under fire and defensive frailties are presenting themselves as serious concerns.
Liverpool’s hand could be forced into January loan deal
Following back-to-back defeats to Palace and Galatasaray, Liverpool’s defence has been exposed. Giovanni Leoni’s ACL injury is also a significant setback, leaving just three fit natural centre-backs on Arne Slot’s roster.
With concerns now heightened, the Reds are reportedly considering movement on the January market. According to Football Insider, the Premier League champions are ‘exploring’ the possibility of signing a new central defender on loan in the new year.
Liverpool could opt for a loan deal in order to secure a quick-fix for their defensive worries. It then leaves them the opportunity to pursue a permanent deal in the summer, with multiple targets linked with Anfield over the last few months.
The 3AM Verdict: If another injury hits Liverpool’s backline, their chances of defending their Premier League title will seriously dwindle. Rivals are looking hungry this season and the Reds cannot afford to allow them the chance to swoop in and snatch their crown. Liverpool have looked out of sorts recently and are yet to hit their top gear since the season started. Bringing in a new centre-back must be a priority at some point, as fans will vividly remember the last defensive injury crisis they had, which forced the likes of inexperienced Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips to man the ship.
Tottenham eye 27-goal striker as Harry Kane alternative
Sensational reports over the summer linked Harry Kane with a return to his boyhood club. Talks of him coming back to the Premier League to push to break Alan Shearer’s have been building and Spurs remain linked with their former frontman.
While Kane’s return would be a stunning move from the club, Spurs are still keeping their options open. According to TEAMtalk, they are ‘keeping an eye’ on FC Porto forward Samu Aghehowa. Tottenham are eager to strengthen their attack, whether that’s with Kane or otherwise.
Aghehowa enjoyed a strong 2024/25 season in Portugal, tallying 27 goals in all competitions. At just 21, he still has the majority of his career ahead of him, and plenty of skill yet to be unleashed.
The 3AM Verdict: Spurs are looking to sign new firepower to lead their attack and Aghehowa’s numbers speak for themselves. While the idea of Kane returning to Tottenham is a dream for many, finance expert Stefan Borson believes the only opportunity for a Spurs return would be under new ownership. To keep their season hopes alive, they must keep their options open and not pin them all on one potential outcome.
