Bednarek, Stewart and Fraser: Southampton injury list and return dates ahead of Liverpool trip

Southampton have endured a tough season so far in the Premier League

Southampton were promoted from the Championship last year after winning the play-offs under former manager Russell Martin. They beat Leeds United in the final at Wembley with Adam Armstrong scoring the winner.

Fast forward to now and the Saints are rock bottom of the Premier League. It has been an incredibly tough season for the Hampshire outfit and they look well on their way to an immediate return to the Football League.

Martin was sacked by in December and was replaced by Ivan Juric. However, he has lost 10 of his first 12 games in charge and his future is up in the air. They are in action this weekend with an away trip to Anfield to play Liverpool.

Southampton defensive and midfield woes

Jan Bednarek - should be available. The centre-back sat out of Southampton’s trip to Chelsea last time out but is likely to return against Liverpool. Juric has said: “Bednarek will be out of this game. It’s nothing serious. Just fatigue.” Expected return date: 08/03/2025.

Juan Larios - doubt. The 21-year-old has been lacking match fitness over recent times and has found game time hard to come by in this campaign. He joined the Saints back in 2022 from Manchester City and the former Seville and Barcelona man has only made a handful of appearances. Expected return date: Unknown.

Kyle Walker-Peters and James Bree - available. The pair were doubts heading into the Chelsea fixture but were both passed fit to feature in the end. They went off against the Blues in the end though and will need to be assessed again. Expected return date: 08/03/2025.

Lesley Ugochukwu - back. He couldn’t play against his parent club in Southampton’s last match. He is due to return to Chelsea when his loan ends. Expected return date: 08/03/2025.

Southampton attacking issues

Ryan Fraser - out. The winger has been sidelined since late January due to injury and has sat out of the past few games. He has played 10 matches since making his switch from Newcastle United permanent and it has been a frustrating season for him. Juric shared this update just over a month ago: “We had problems with [Ryan] Fraser and [Nathan Wood], not big ones, but they will be out for this one.” Expected return date: Unknown.

Adam Lallana - should be available. Lallana missed the match against Chelsea with a thigh injury. However, it isn’t too serious and he could also return against his former club on Saturday. Speaking ahead of the match at Stamford Bridge late last month, his manager said: “Lallana has a little problem with his hamstring that we'll see tomorrow.” Expected return date: 08/03/2025.

Ross Stewart - out. He has had rotten luck on the injury front since joining Southampton from Sunderland and simply hasn’t been able to get going yet. The Scotsman is in the treatment room with a muscle problem right now and an exact return date cannot be established at this moment in time which isn’t ideal. Expected return date: Unknown.
