Torres, Cash and Maatsen: Aston Villa injury news latest ahead of Coventry City cup clash

The latest Aston Villa injury news ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with Coventry City

Aston Villa’s disappointing start to the 2026/27 Premier League season continued last weekend, as they fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest. The Tricky Trees took the lead in the first half through a thunderbolt from ex-Chelsea flop Liam Delap, before substitute Alysson drew Villa level. Forest had the last laugh, however, as Igor Jesus’ late goal saw them snatch all three points at Villa Park.

The result leaves Unai Emery’s side 19th in the Premier League after four matches, and there is serious cause for concern after a match in which they managed just six shots to their opponents’ 21. Dig deeper into the stats, and it gets worse, with Villa managing just 0.89xG to Forest’s 1.92, raising fears over both the attacking impotency and defensive fragility.

Next up, Villa - who experienced a major squad overhaul during the summer with the whole spine of their Europa League winning side replaced - take a twenty-mile trip to face fellow strugglers Coventry City in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Ahead of Wednesday night’s clash, we’ve rounded up the latest Aston Villa injury news.

Aston Villa injury news update: Pau Torres is latest concern

It took just 25 minutes for Pau Torres to be withdrawn from action against Nottingham Forest. He limped off in clear discomfort, clutching the hamstring on his right leg. The extent of his injury is yet to be determined, but it’s likely that we will miss around two to four weeks - meaning that he should be back following the international break.

Meanwhile, The Athletic report that Ian Maatsen will miss six to eight weeks with an ankle injury also suffered in Villa’s defeat to Forest. A controversial tackle from behind from James McAtee did the damage, and while Maatsen managed to avoid a fracture, the tendon damage he suffered will see him out of action potentially until mid-November.

Poland international Matty Cash had hoped to return to face his former club last weekend, after missing Villa’s 3-2 Champions League win away to Club Brugge with a muscular issue. That didn’t happen, with the 29-year-old unable to even feature on the bench. It remains to be seen whether he shakes off the complaint in time to face Coventry on Wednesday.

Aston Villa injury latest: Brian Majdo and Leon Goretzka still out

17-year-old Brian Madjo made a name for himself with a roller coaster debut in Villa’s Super Cup loss to PSG, scoring a goal before cruelly succumbing to injury. The teenage talent - who we expect to burst into our Wonderkid Power Rankings later this season - will be out until after the international break as he continues to recover from a foot injury.

Another frustration for Villa is the continued absence of Leon Gortezka, who was brought in on a free transfer in the hope of bolstering Emery’s options in midfield. He suffered a knee injury when he returned to training following his post-World Cup break, and also won’t feature until the extended international break concludes.

If Amadou Onana is to play any football for the Villans this season, it most likely won’t be until the very end of the campaign. The £50m gem suffered an ACL injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the blow coming 21 minutes into Belgium’s 4-1 hammering of the USA in the Round of 16 stage of the competition.
