James, João Pedro & Palmer: Latest Chelsea injury news and return dates as star players ruled out
The latest Chelsea injury list and return dates heading into the international break - including updates on the fitness of Cole Palmer, Reece James & João Pedro.
The extended three-week international break will give many members of Chelsea’s squad the opportunity to rest and heal up after a busy start to the Premier League season – and it’s an opportunity that quite a few of their players might need given that several key players seem to have run into fitness problems of late.

Both João Pedro and Reece James missed Friday’s defeat to Brentford with fresh injury issues, and Cole Palmer added to the worries by withdrawing from the England squad ahead of the Three Lions’ first four Nations League matches. In total, five first-team players have been ruled out of international duties for the next three weeks.
With so many fitness issues in the squad, we’ve gathered all of the latest Chelsea injury news below, along with the stricken players’ expected return dates when available.
Cole Palmer & Reece James among new Chelsea injury concerns

Club captain Reece James was absent from training last week due to what head coach Xabi Alonso described as a “little injury in his hamstring” and ultimately missed both the 3-0 defeat to Brentford and Thomas Tuchel’s first post-World Cup England squad.
Tuchel confirmed on Friday that James’ exclusion was due to fitness concerns, but although the 26-year-old’s long history of hamstring problems means that this latest injury will send shivers down quite a few supporters’ spines, it doesn’t sound as though he’s likely to miss much time – Alonso said that James was “just short of recovering” for the Brentford match, and he’s expected to be back to full fitness in good time for Chelsea’s next game against Bournemouth on 10 October.
Cole Palmer, meanwhile, played the full 90 minutes on Friday and was subsequently recalled to the England squad, but dropped out on Monday, with the reason a matter of some debate.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported that the decision was purely due to “load management” after Palmer endured a number of fitness problems during the 2025/26 season, but The Evening Standard state their sources have claimed that Palmer has a muscular injury. They do, however, suggest that Palmer will be available again after the international break, and there appear to be no fears that his latest injury issue is a significant one.
João Pedro & Moisés Caicedo also out of international squads

Striker João Pedro was another player who missed out on Friday’s game against Brentford, with his absence expected after he withdrew from Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad with what has been reported as a knee injury.
ESPN Brasil claim that he has suffered an edema due to sprained anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, with the injury apparently sustained during the recent 2-2 draw with Hull City. Their report adds that a recovery timeline of three to four weeks can be expected – that suggests that he has a good chance of being available to face Bournemouth, but he may be in line for a late fitness test depending on how quickly he heals.
Midfielder Moisés Caicedo, meanwhile, was also left out of Ecuador’s international squad while he continues his recovery from a persistent calf injury. That injury has limited Caicedo to just 14 minutes of competitive football since the summer, but Alonso has hinted that he should be back to full fitness after the break.
Chelsea are also hoping that a three-week break will be enough for two new signings, full-back Marco Palestra and forward Emmanuel Emegha, to be match ready in time to face Bournemouth. Neither player has yet made their debut for the club as a result of unspecified muscular issues, and neither will play for their countries over the coming weeks as a consequence of those problems – but both should be available to face Bournemouth barring setbacks. As it stands, only João Pedro appears to be a significant doubt for Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture.
