The electric £47m wonderkid wanted by Man Utd – and whether he’ll sign

A number of recent rumours link Manchester United with a young winger making waves in Serie A - but is a deal really on the cards?

While Manchester United’s immediate priority for the coming transfer window is their search for a new left-back, another position which could be addressed in the near future is their attacking line.

There are concerns at Old Trafford about their depth up front and every chance that the club move to add a fresh face should an appealing opportunity arise, and according to new reports, one player might have made his way to the top of their early shortlist: Como and Senegal winger Assane Diao.

Several recent rumours link Manchester United with a bid for the talented 21-year-old, but how likely is it that a deal takes place – and would he improve Michael Carrick’s squad if he does make a move?

A number of rumour outlets have made reference to Manchester United’s alleged interest in Diao over the past couple of days, but almost all of those stories reference the same original source – Swiss outlet 4-4-2.

Their story cites anonymous sources in suggesting that United’s scouts are “completely convinced” by the young winger, although it also states that other Premier League teams are keen on him. Aston Villa, Newcastle, Liverpool, Everton and Brentford are all mentioned as teams who have been tracking his progress.

The report further claims that Diao’s current employers Como have yet to receive any bids for the Senegal international, but suggests – without providing any evidence – that they would accept bids in the region of €50-55m (up to £46.5m).

3 Added Minutes has been unable to verify the accuracy of 4-4-2’s reporting, but most gossip sites should be treated with a degree of scepticism. With the strength of their sourcing unclear, there is every possibility that their reporting may be inaccurate. Diao, however, is a player who has been linked with a move to the Premier League on a number of occasions since he first began to make a name for himself with Real Betis.

The winger is under contract at Como until 2029, which provides his current club with short-term leverage, but by next summer Diao would be entering the final two years of his deal – the point at which most financially savvy sides either sell valuable players to get a good price or attempt to tie them down to a new deal.

A January deal would be difficult for Manchester United or any other club to pull off under the circumstances, especially given that Como, who are playing Champions League football for the first time this season, aren’t under the kind of financial pressure many Italian clubs are experiencing at the moment.

If Manchester United are indeed interested, then it’s far more likely that they would be able to make a deal happen in the summer of 2027 than over the winter. They’d also be getting a player who could make a positive difference.

Why Diao is in demand

While the story linking Diao with a move to the Premier League is inherently speculative for now, especially given that it will be many weeks before any clubs enter serious negotiations over winter transfers, the notion that he might make a big move soon isn’t hard to swallow.

Diao, a right-footed winger who has operated on both flanks over the course of his career, first broke into Betis’ first team in 2023 and scored twice within a fortnight of his first appearance – but although evidently physically gifted and technically talented, he struggled with consistency early on and was sold to Como in January 2025 for a fee of around £10m.

He has thrived in Serie A since that transfer. After scoring 10 goals in 35 appearances over his first 18 months at the club, Diao appears to have found another gear since representing Senegal at the World Cup over the summer – he has already scored three in six games, including a goal against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, and created another against Napoli.

Key to his apparent improvement has been the development of his dribbling. Always fast, powerful and willing to take defenders on, his success rate in such situations has improved markedly – he is completing 50% more carries in Serie A so far this season and is beating his man 52% of the time compared to 39% last season.

That burgeoning ability to force his way into dangerous positions is paying off in terms of his goalscoring and his ability to create chances, and he’s already averaging a hugely impressive 2.6 key passes per game this season – over five times as many as he was able to make per match in 2025/26.

In short, he’s now bringing his skill, speed and strength to bear in ways which get him past the last man more often, and the results have been hugely impressive. If Manchester United – or any of his other potential suitors – want a goalscoring winger who has the capacity to stretch the field and create chances, then Diao may well fit the bill, and there is plenty of room for him to develop further.

Barring unforeseen changes in his circumstances at Como, any club hoping to sign Diao will probably have to be patient, and that will at least provide their scouts with the time to work out whether his recent form is sustainable or a flash in the pan – but this is a player who already looks dangerous at the top level and was productive even before he took his recent steps forward. Don’t be surprised if he pitches up in the Premier League eventually. Just don’t hold your breath if you’re a Manchester United fan.
